LOCATION HANDMADE ZINES

Location Zines (2011). Cover and double page spreads from a series of handmade zines. A5 books, cartridge paper, blind continuous-line drawings on tracing paper, emulsion print on fabric, family photos, craft, drawings and some photographs by Heather Waterfield.

This Fine Art project visually exploring the theme of ‘Location’ and Dislocation. These nostalgic photographs depict scenes my family garden and childhood home. Objects like the teddy bear, the swing set, the bird bath and the Wendy House, tell stories from my childhood, reminding me of memories and igniting emotions that are all the more poignant since my mother has since moved away to a new house and county.

The jumbled arrangement, dark tones and combination layered imagery - abstract drawings and family photographs, reflects the complicated feelings of grief that come with growing up and leaving and childhood behind. The sentimental objects are all that’s left of these scenes, even many family photographs were ruined by water damage years later. The continuous-line blind studies create an abstract interpretation of the objects, illustrating fading childhood memories.

Scroll on to see a combination hand-drawn studies of familiar and unfamiliar photographs of objects, scenes; some abstract and some realistic. Imagery representing the familiarity and comfort of childhood memories, family and home, combined with the unfamiliar but thrilling feeling of being ‘dislocated’ in a new place, travelling, discovering new things, places, experiences and creative inspiration.

The images originate from discoveries from my first trip to Amsterdam aged 17, like an abandoned tram or wooden sculpture, to create new abstract arrangements and designs.
